N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
A most unusual and amazing specimen of rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning II mine features a gorgeous deep red color and a glass luster. This specimen also has deep, almost black inclusions (likely manganese) in one direction which creates a great defining aesthetic to the crystals. The crystals themselves are modified and elongated scalenohedrons. The cluster does have some chipped crystals which is not uncommon from this locality which was commonly blasted with explosives during mining. They do fade into the specimen's beautiful color and luster and the price point for this larger gemmy piece is reduced for the damage. The plate is very translucent and when lit to any extent it sets off the contrasted faces beautifully. This specimen also comes with a custom base made by Sunnywood custom bases
